Genetic Testing | DNA Testing Glossary

Genetic testing is a broad term for any laboratory analysis of DNA, RNA, chromosomes, or proteins to detect changes associated with inherited conditions, carrier status, or biological relationships. DNA relationship testing — such as paternity, maternity, sibling, and grandparent tests — is one category within this larger field. Other categories include diagnostic testing for genetic disorders, carrier screening, pharmacogenomic testing, and newborn screening. The specific technology used depends on the purpose: relationship testing relies on STR analysis, while medical genetic testing often uses sequencing or microarray methods. Relationship testing and medical genetic testing serve different purposes and use different techniques, even though both fall under the "genetic testing" umbrella.
