Relationship Testing | DNA Testing Glossary
Relationship testing is the use of DNA analysis to determine whether two or more individuals share a biological relationship. It encompasses paternity testing, maternity testing, sibling testing, grandparent testing, avuncular (aunt/uncle) testing, and other kinship comparisons. All of these use STR analysis to compare genetic markers between the tested individuals. "Relationship testing" is preferred over "paternity testing" as an umbrella term because it covers every type of biological relationship that can be evaluated, not just father-child. Relationship testing can be performed for personal knowledge (home testing) or for legal purposes (with chain-of-custody procedures). US Diagnostics Center offers relationship testing for paternity, maternity, sibling, grandparent, and aunt/uncle relationships.
