Home DNA Test | DNA Testing Glossary

A home DNA test is a DNA relationship test where participants collect their own samples at home using a kit that is mailed to them. The test provides results for personal knowledge and peace of mind, but because the samples are self-collected without a neutral witness, the results are not admissible in court. The lab analysis is identical to a legal test — same STR technology, same number of markers, same accuracy. The only difference is the absence of chain-of-custody documentation. Home test kits are the most popular option for relationship testing because they are private, convenient, and cost less than legal testing. US Diagnostics Center ships home test kits with prepaid return envelopes and delivers results in 2 to 3 business days after samples reach the lab.
