Kinship DNA Test | DNA Testing Glossary
A kinship DNA test is an umbrella term for any DNA test that determines a biological relationship other than direct paternity or maternity. This includes sibling tests, grandparent tests, avuncular (aunt/uncle) tests, and other extended family comparisons. Kinship testing uses the same STR analysis technology as paternity testing, but the statistical calculations are more complex because the individuals being compared are not in a direct parent-child relationship. Results are reported as a likelihood ratio comparing the probability that the tested individuals are biologically related versus unrelated. These tests are most commonly used when the alleged parent is unavailable for direct testing.
